Keloid Scars & Skin Blemishes

Keloid comes from the Greek word "chele" which means crab's claw. This term is used to describe the claw-like appearance of tissue which develops around an injury site or scar area beyond a wound's original limit. Typically, the injured area will have an overgrowth of skin, which will rise up from the site and form into a keloid. The keloid scar is firm to the touch, and can be slightly pink.

Keloids can carry on growing indefinitely into a large, tumorous (although benign) growth. They are only inert masses of collagen and therefore completely harmless and non-contagious.

Keloids are firm, rubbery lesions or shiny, fibrous nodules and can vary from pink to flesh-colored or red to dark brown in color.

While not dangerous, keloid scar may itch, cause pain or be tender to the touch. Keloids occur from infancy up to old age, although peak occurrence is from ages 10 to 20.

Keloids affect both sexes equally. However, it should be noted that darker skin types (types V-VI) are most likely to have keloids over any other skin type.  In the worse cases keloids can be quite disfiguring.

Keloid scars usually originate from an injury such a burn or severe acne, but they can also arise from minor injuries as a scratch, razor cut or an insect bite. While the skin begins healing normally, something goes awry and the scar overfills with collagen, causing it to swell and enlarge.

No one understands why keloid scars form and while surgery (traditional and cryosurgery) can remove keloids, they often return. Whatever the cause, there does appear to be a genetic component. This type of scarring is found most often in people of African and Asian origins and also seems to run in families.

Over-scarring also occurs in cases where the healing process doesn't complete the "remodeling" process properly. During this normal phase of healing the body adds more collagen to the scar for added skin strength and then it should start removing portions of the same collagen over time, continually shrinking the scar. Sometimes this does not happen as it should and the result is excessive scarring.

I had an upper right pulmonary lobectomy on 9/10/01; and, subsequenty developed four small (1/2' or less) and one large (4') keloids on the chest wall on the right side of my rib cage and another small (1/2') one on my back.
